Volunteer & Earn Chai Hours

Wornick Jewish Day School is a vibrant, connected community -- and is so because of amazing volunteers who give their time to further strengthen the school’s programs and events. Families are asked to contribute 18 “Chai” volunteer hours each year, so that our community can continue this tradition of connectedness. It is also a wonderful way to get to know other families!

Both the school and the PTO rely on volunteers to help make the school year a success. We need help with various projects and events, many of which can be done at home or on weekends. Please click here to view and sign up for 2019-2020 PTO volunteer opportunities via SignUpGenius. (Check this link throughout the year to see updates on events and volunteer needs.)

Why do we require Chai hours?

Your volunteer hours help support the amazing programs and events provided by the school. This time investment also helps to build a strong, connected Wornick community, and is a great way to better know your fellow Wornick parents and teachers.

How can I earn Chai hours?

Chai hours can be earned by chairing or participating on a PTO event committee. By way of example, they can also be earned by:

  • Hosting a school event (such as a New Parent Social)
  • Assisting at a specific event (such as Shabbat Dinner, Book Fair, Chanukkah party, Annual Fundraising dinner Wornickfest, and Teacher Appreciation)
  • Attending PTO meetings
  • Attending / Driving for class field trips
  • Assisting the school front office
  • Helping in the classroom (such as library, technology, and special classes)
  • Carpooling for middle school sports
  • Helping assemble family gifts, goody bags, and school handouts
  • Serving Hot Lunch
  • Being a Room Parent
  • Being a Mentor Family
  • Hosting a summer picnic or BBQ for your class or grade
  • Sitting on the Board of Trustees or one of its sub-committees (such as Finance, Strategic Planning, etc.)
If your volunteer experience includes something that is not listed above, or you are not sure whether something qualifies for Chai hours, please let us know and we are happy to help!
