Technology Class: Feb 20 - Feb 24

Back to the real world.  This was a very productive week.  I have had some outside responsibilities kick into high gear, so that should make for a very interesting spring, but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Kindergarten: We went a bit deeper into Kid Pix this week.  I asked them to find a specific background (one of a young girl) and put it on the screen.  Then we used the mixing tools to alter the picture.  I also introduced the students to the Uh-oh tool.

1st Grade: 1A – We talked about the Internet.  We discussed what the Internet is (a connection of billions of computers), and defined the World Wide Web.  We talked about visiting websites and navigating them to find information.  We then visited http://www.littleexplorers.com to complete an activity.  I told the students that those who finished the assignment at home would get a prize when they came back in a couple of weeks.
1B – No class

2nd Grade: 2A – No class
2B – We finished up our research on the Internet by taking more notes on types of weather.  During our next class session we will get to creating the slides.

3rd Grade: We continued to learn how to type this week by learning the keys associated with the ring fingers.  The students then practiced their typing in class and on the Internet using activities I introduced them too previously.
Homework: Typing logs are due next week

4th Grade: 4A – The students worked on a project for Mrs. Seligman.
4B – No Class
Homework:

5th Grade: The students continued researching their webpage topics.  This time they not only found images, but also bookmarked relevant sites they can use as links on their site.
Homework:

6th Grade: We got a majority of the pictures into the computers and installed Adobe Photoshop onto many of the computers.  We then talked about using a forum for Hebrew class.
Homework: Typing logs due next week

7th Grade: We reviewed motion techniques in animation from previous lessons, while building upon their previous knowledge.  Then I discusses adding scenes to the movie.  Finally, the students each came up front to show the class their progress on their animations.
Homework: Typing logs due next week

8th Grade: We continued filming this week

Technology Class: Feb 6 - Feb 10

We had a SPECTACULAR presentation in the Middle School on Internet Safety this Friday by Sherman Hall from the Rapid Enforcement Allied Computer Team, which is a part of the Atherton Police Department.

The students were excellent participants and asked some very insightful and probing questions.  They learned about the dangers of exposing person information on the Internet and the dangers of Internet predators.

Every Middle School student was assigned homework to write three paragraphs about how they were going to keep themselves safe on the Internet.

Kindergarten: We made signs for our rooms at home.  Students were asked to write their names using the ABC tool, drawing it, or using the animations.  Then the students were allowed to decorate it any way they pleased.  After they were done, the student printed their own work by themselves.

1st Grade: Due to a time crunch, the students were given free time on Kid Pix.

2nd Grade: 2A – We continued our research on http://www.yahooligans.com.  This time the students began taking notes on the various types of weather.
2B – We started to create our slides.  The students created a background, imported graphics, and added a sentence about their type of weather.  We discovered that the students need to conduct more research, so we will go back on the Internet next week.

3rd Grade: We continued to learn how to type this week by learning the keys associated with the middle fingers.  The students then practiced their typing.  I introduced the kids to the typing activities I have on my website at http://wornickjds.org/tech/studentresources.html#Typing

4th Grade: 4A – The students finished up their powerpoint presentations this week.  I think they did an exceptional job for students of their age.  I am very proud of them all.
4B – I introduced the students to our next big project: A brochure.  The students are going create brochure about our school from a students prospective.  They then broke into teams and brainstorms topics for their sections of the brochure.
Homework:

5th Grade: The students started to do research on their webpage topics.  They visited http://images.google.com and downloaded pictures they are going to use on their pages.
Homework:

6th Grade: We continued to take pictures this week.  The students learned how to use a tripod and take pictures of stationary objects.  We also took a tour of the school and took indoor shots.
Homework: Bring your camera!

7th Grade: We began to make things move this week.  We reviewed the rules for making objects move: object has to be a movie clip, be on its own layer, and be moved between keyframes.  We started to get their characters to move.
Homework:

8th Grade: We discovered we weren’t ready to start filming.  So we had to review a couple of the scenes in order to make sure we weren’t wasting our time when we did begin filming.  We will start next week.

Technology Class: Jan 30 - Feb 3

I hope that groundhog didn’t curse us to a cold February.

Kindergarten: I introduced the square and circle tools in Kid Pix this week.  Then the students were asked to create an airport, complete with a runway, terminal, tower, and airplanes.

1st Grade: The students used Kid Pix to create a picture about Groundhog’s Day.  They had to write a few sentences about the Groundhog, then draw his habitat.  The students then printed their work themselves.

2nd Grade: After realizing that littleexplorers.com had insufficient data for our projects, we turned our attention to http://www.yahooligans.com.  The students view webpages and watched movies about various types of weather.

3rd Grade: 3A – No class
3B - We continued to learn how to type this week by learning the keys associated with the index fingers.  The students then practiced their typing.

4th Grade: 4A – The students continued to give their powerpoint presentations.  However, we didn’t get a chance to finish, so they will finish up next week.
4B – The student worked on Internet Webquest where they had to visit various sites on the Internet and find specific information.  Those who didn’t finish took it home for homework.
Homework:

5th Grade: I assigned the teams for our webpage project and the students collaborated to come up with the topics for their pages.  They started doing some basic research...we will continue next week.
Homework:

6th Grade: We began taking pictures.  The students spent time taking pictures around the grounds of the school.
Homework: Bring your camera!

Internet Safety Homework

First off, I wanted to thank everyone for coming to see Officer Hall this afternoon.  He gave a very good presentation that should have all of you thinking about keeping yourselves safe on the Internet.

So, your homework, due Monday by 3:30 pm is:

Email matt@wornickjds.org a 3 paragraph summary about how you plan to stay safe on the Internet.

Here are some questions you should cover in your summary, but don’t limit yourselves to these:
  • What information do you need to protect?
  • Who is safe to talk to?
  • What would you do if you got into an unsafe situation?
  • How are you going to tell if someone is a predator?

If you have any questions, please email me.
