Technology Class: Dec 12-16

The season for winter break has started and the impatience is in the air.  Even with antsy kids, we still managed to get a lot of stuff done.

Have a great break!

Kindergarten: We used Kid Pix to create Hanukkah cards.  The kids drew something associated with Hanukkah, whether it was family, presents, a dreidel, a menorah, or gelt.  The students then put their names on them and we printed them out to go home.

1st Grade: We finished our Hanukkah cards.  The students opened up Kid Pix, then opened their work from last week.  The students finished adding drawn elements, stickers, and typed text.  They then saved again and printed.

2nd Grade:  2B – Monday - We started on our Hanukkah cards.  In this first portion, the students used http://images.google.com to search for images related to Hannukah then saved them to their folders.  Next week we will put them into Kid Pix and finish up the card then print them.
2A – We used Kid Pix to create our Hanukkah cards.  The students found appropriate backgrounds, imported images from the previous class, and added text.  They then saved their work and printed it.

3rd Grade: 3A – The students came in late, so we were unable to print their work, but they did create Hanukkah cards on Kid Pix.  Some students saved their work.
3B – The students were given free time as it was the last day before break.  They had a choice of playing on the Internet or play with Kid Pix.

4th Grade: Mr. B and Mrs. Seligman took the computer time to complete an in-class assignment using the computers.
Homework:

5th Grade: We finished up our Powerpoint projects.  The students were given 45 more minutes to clean up their work and make sure it was all ready for their presentations in January.  They students will give their presentations the first week in January.
Homework:

6th Grade: Since it was the last day of school before the break, I gave the students free time.  But we did install Photoshop Elements 3 on several of their computers.  We will finish the installations in January.
Homework:

7th Grade: We continued to play with Macromedia Flash.  The students were exposed to a few more elements of the drawing palette and learned a bit about Shape Tweening.  We will jump in with both feet when we return in January.
Homework:

8th Grade: We spent the first half of the class discussing the MySpace issue from the previous class with Mrs. Lewin.  We held a Q & A where the students were got clarification on the reasons for decisions that were made.  I then informed them that any information or pictures that mentioned the school or were taken at school needed to be removed that night, or actions would be taken.  Then we spent the rest of the class talking about editing for tone.  We talked about how fast cuts make the action feel more intense and long takes slow down the action.

Technology Class: Dec 5 - 9

Safety and privacy are the buzz words of the week.  This week has been an immense learning experience for me on so many levels.  Email me for further details...

Kindergarten: We worked on Kid Pix and found the animations.  At first I showed them where to find the animations and demonstrated a few of them.  Then I gave them instructions to find specific ones.  They are getting pretty strong in the application.

1st Grade: We started our Hannukah cards.  The students opened up Kid Pix, found a background and started adding content.  We talked about what a card to someone needs.  They learned how to save their work...next week we finish them up and print them.

2nd Grade: 2A- We started on our Hanukkah cards.  In this first portion, the students used http://images.google.com to search for images related to Hannukah then saved them to their folders.  Next week we will put them into Kid Pix and finish up the card then print them.
2B – No Class

3rd Grade: 3A - No class
3B – The students made Hannukah cards.  They opened up Kid Pix, found a background, added images and text then saved and printed their work.  We have discovered that KP has some printing bugs that I will have to work on before next week.

4th Grade: We worked on our Powerpoint projects.  The students continued to add content and prepare for their presentations.  They will finish them up next week, then present them when they get back in January.
Homework:

5th Grade: We worked on our Powerpoint projects.  The students continued to add content and prepare for their presentations.  They will finish them up next week, then present them when they get back in January.
Homework:

6th Grade: We talked about backing up data.  We spoke about using email, CDs, flash drives, printing, and connecting to the server to save their data.  We went through an exercise where they actually connected to the server and uploaded a file and another one where they burned a CD.  Now, they should be ready to make copies of important material.
Homework:

7th Grade: I introduced Macromedia Flash to the students.  We had a fun activity where the students go to learn about the user interface, create some objects, then animate them.  We talked about the drawing tools, then drew some circles and squares.  We then animated them and changed their speeds and rotations and added acceleration and deceleration.  I think they had a good time.
Homework:

8th Grade: We continued out Film Studies this week by talking about the movie camera.  We discussed the difference between panning and tracking.  We then talked about methods for moving the camera via handheld camera, steadicam, dolly shots, zooming, and crane shots.  Then we talked about special shots such as a Zolly or Hitchcock Zoom.  We watched several examples from real movies.  I think the kids are really getting into it...or they just like watching the movies.
Homework: Assignment 2 – The Moving Camera
As you are watching the movie, pick a scene and analyze how the camera shots are used to bring you into the movie...

Part 2 - Write an email
Write a 3 paragraph email about your analysis.
Paragraph 1 - Describe the movie and the scene
Paragraph 2-3 - Analyze the scene in terms of the moving camera shots used.

Send your email to homework@wornickjds.org

Teacher Link Exchange

As part of the new Tech Department web site, I have created a Teacher Link Exchange.  With this web page teachers will be able to submit links and see links submitted by other teachers.

Why did I do this?  Well, any links webpage I create will be a) quickly outdated b) take time to maintain c) not be as appropriate for teacher since I don’t know what you want...that being said, I did create a link page for you...

But with this Teacher Link Exchange you can create and maintain a list of links that are important to you in the classroom and out.

Here is what I need from you:  A list of categories to organize the links.  For example, Math, Judaica, Games, Jokes, Curriculum, etc.

Can you please send me some ideas?  Thanks.

If you would like to see a preview of the link exchange, go to http://www.wornickjds.org/tech/teacherlinkexchange

Technology Class: Nov 28 - Dec 2

Note to self: Getting sick is no fun...try to avoid in the future.

I have only been at school for 2 days this week, so there is not a ton to report.  I feel bad that I was feeling so bad...the kids suffered as much as I did because they didn’t get a chance to have computer class...

...and there is some fun stuff starting up.

Kindergarten: No Class

1st Grade: No Class

2nd Grade: No Class

3rd Grade: 3A - No class
3B – We talked about the Internet today.  We discussed how the Internet works and concentrated specifically on the World Wide Web.  We then talked about Google and did some activities on Google.  Ask the kids about “I’m Feeling Lucky”.  Then I set them free on Google to research info on their science projects.

4th Grade: No Class
Homework: Typing logs due next week.

5th Grade: No Class
Homework: Typing logs due next week.

6th Grade: We finished up our Powerpoint presentations this week.  The kids did real well again.  I will reiterate what I have said before: These kids are amazing.  This was an advanced topic and they ran with it...way to go.
Homework:

7th Grade: We began talking about Computer Animation today.  We talked about the project they will be creating starting in January and what I expect.  Then we discussed how Animation really works and how we are going to make things a whole lot easier.  We then discussed Disney’s 12 principle of good animation and analyzed a clip from The Simpsons...I think the kids are going to have a lot fun with this.
Homework:

8th Grade: We began our Film Studies this week.  We started off by talking about the new Tech website and how to find things, then discussed the extra credit that was available by coming up with categories for the Student Link Exchange.  We then jumped into our film studies...this time: Camera Shots and Framing.  We defined shots such as Extreme Long Shot, Close Up, etc by going to a website I created for my Master’s Degree...to check it out go to http://www.wornickjds.org/tech/movies .  Then we viewed some movies and analyzed them from a camera shot perspective.
Homework: 1. Typing Logs are due next week
2. Movie HW:
