Gobble...Gobble...Gobble. HAVE A GREAT THANKSGIVING!
We got some work done this week, even tho it was short. The 4th and 5th graders started in on their powerpoint presentations and the 8th graders learned about backing up data.
Next week, I will, yes, me, actually have to teach a full load. I have not had to do so...since...well, last year. Yeah, I have not taught my entire week’s load of course yet this year.
Kindergarten: We used Kid Pix to create Thanksgiving pictures. The students first found an appropriate background then drew items they were thankful for. It was interesting to see what the kids were thankful for.
1st Grade: We used Kid Pix to create Thanksgiving pictures. The students first found an appropriate background then drew items they were thankful for. It was interesting to see what the kids were thankful for.
2nd Grade: 2A – We continued our lesson about using the Internet. This time the students learned how to use the Internet to search for information. Images specifically. The students used http://images.google.com to search for images, then learned how to download them.
2B – No Class
3rd Grade: No class
4th Grade: We talked about Powerpoint. I showed the students how easy it is to create a powerpoint presentation. We talked about the rule of 6 and using graphics sparingly. The students then worked on their presentation in class. They will finish their presentations next week and present them the following.

SD Cards
Hello all,
Thanks to an EXTREMELY generous donation from a parent in the Elementary School, we now have 6...yes 6...brand new HP digital cameras to use. This will most directly effect the Middle School give upcoming events and Tech curriculum...
...however, the cameras came without SD memory cards. So I am putting out a request for help.
We need 6 SD memory cards, minimum 256MBs. Many people who have upgraded their cards or cameras have them lying around...or they can be purchased at Staples, Fry’s, Best Buy, etc. for a modest price.
Any and all help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
-Matt

Conferences, time off...and LOTS of Internet usage. It was good and productive week...
...keep an eye out for my /tech website. I am completely revamping it...it should be done in the coming weeks.
Kindergarten: We made fall pictures using Kid Pix. The students selected an appropriate background then drew themselves doing something that you would do during the fall. In KB, we actually had time to print our work.
1st Grade: We made fall pictures using Kid Pix. The students selected an appropriate background then drew themselves doing something that you would do during the fall. In 1A, we actually had time to save our work.
2nd Grade: We started talking about the Internet. We talked about how the Internet works and how it is really just a gigantic network of computers. We discussed the numbers of people on the Internet and the need to keep ourselves safe...treat everyone like a stranger. The we talked about the World Wide Web and what webpages really are. The students then got onto the Internet using Safari and searched for jokes on http://www.yahooligans.com. We discussed navigation and hyperlinks.
3rd Grade: 3A – We learned about going on the Internet. The students were introduced to web searching by visiting http://www.google.com and searched for information about Native Americans.
3B – No class
4th Grade: 4A — The students continued their research for their powerpoint presentations. They visited http:// images.google.com and downloaded pictures.
4B — The students helped me out a bit and fixed the dock. They learned how to add things to the dock, resize it, and reorder the items...applications tend to leave the dock during the Kindergarten computer time.

8th Grade: We talked about using MS Excel. We discussed cells, columns, and rows. The students learned how to enter data and organize/sort it. We then talked about creating graphs from the data, and formatting the graphs. Then we worked on functions and calculating averages, etc.
Homework: Assignment 7 – Excel
1. Create a new Excel spreadsheet and enter in 5 categories of information with at least 5 pieces of information per category (you can make this up -- for example, in class we wrote down test scores, this would be 1 category)
2. For one of the categories, find the max, min, and average...save these into OBVIOUS, LABELED cells
3. Create a graph (you choose which type), cut and paste it into word. Write a 3-4 sentence paragraph about what I should interpret from the chart.
Attach the a) EXCEL spreadsheet and b)WORD document

Projectors available for classroom use
This is mostly intended for Elementary school instructors:
We now have 2 projectors on projector carts that available for classroom use. In order to use one, just check it from me in the library. In the near future, I hope to have one placed upstairs for easy access to 3-5 teachers.
To use the projector is quite simple:
- Plug it in.
- Turn it on.
- Plug the white connector into your laptop (which is presumably on).
To best position the projector, position the cart 5 feet away from the white board and aim it at the white board...then adjust. Leave your computer on the stand attached to the projector as you use it. To make the image bigger, move the cart back, to make it smaller move forward. To focus the image, adjust the small ring on the lens.
THIS IS A GREAT TOOL FOR SHOWING KIDS HOW TO EDIT WORK, POWERPOINT PRESENTATIONS, SHARING NOTES, etc...

Printers upstairs
The printers have been put out in the hall, so you won’t have to go into Mr. Schatten’s room to print. However, the color printer (HP BusinessJet ...) is not hooked up, yet... Hopefully, early next week it will be hooked up to the network...so in the meantime, print to the Laserjet 1320 series only...thanks.

A slight emergency this week that gave me a few new gray hairs, but as all things do, it all worked out.
The kids are doing great with their powerpoint projects. The 4th and 5th graders are deep in the mix now, and the 6th and 7th graders have already presented...I was EXTREMELY impressed with their presentations.
ERBs are now over...and I think after Thanksgiving we are REALLY going to get into the thick of the fun stuff in the Middle School. Stay tuned.
Kindergarten: After a little bit of disorganization, the students explored Kid Pix again. They are getting quite good at moving the mouse and click and dragging. Then we investigated the Paint Brush tools, both the paint brush and the spray can. I think the kids really enjoyed finding the candy and the money.
1st Grade: Due to the emergency on Monday, the students weren’t given any instruction...they just had free time. We will get back into the full swing next week.
2nd Grade: No Class
3rd Grade: 3A – No class
3B – Because I didn’t want them to get too far ahead of the other class, I gave the students free time on Kid Pix. It is amazing to see what they can find. They find stuff even I don’t know about and I have the manual.
4th Grade: 4A — No Class
4B — The students finished up their research for their powerpoint presentations. Then we talked about how to download images off the Internet. The students were given the task of finding and downloading 10 large images off the Internet to include in their presentations. Next week, we start creating the presentations themselves.
Homework:
5th Grade: Finally, I got to see these students again. It had been a LONG time. We got started on their powerpoint presentations. They began with research by using google to find sites about their topics and take notes based on the information they found. Next week, we will download images.
Homework:
6th Grade: About half the students gave their presentations. We talked about using Powerpoint as a supplement to the presentation, not the focal point. Try not to read the slides and make sure to address the entire crowd. Show confidence in the subject matter and speak in a conversational manner. And most importantly, keep going...there will inevitably be a problem...just roll with the punches. The student did a PHENOMENAL job. Not just for their age or ability level, but in general. I have seen good and bad presentations in my time and these kids did great.
Homework:
7th Grade: First, we finished up our presentations...I am SO impressed with this group. Then we talked about backing up data. We spoke about using email, CDs, flash drives, printing, and connecting to the server to save their data. We went through an exercise where they actually connected to the server and uploaded a file. Now, they should be ready to make copies of important material.

So, I thought this was going to be a full week...and for the most part it was. Then there were ERBs. I don’t think I am going to actually teach every class in my schedule until December.
We are starting to get into the thick of it in most classes. The middle school students are doing some good powerpoint work...their presentations should be great...in fact some of them were.
Kindergarten: We spoke about backgrounds this week. The students got some free time to start the class and check out more the functions of Kid Pix. Then I introduced them to the vast number of backgrounds available and how to put them in the main stage. I then challenged them to find a background that would be appropriate for Fall.
1st Grade: We investigated the paint brush tools in Kid Pix. The students were shown how to draw fun lines, add trees, windows, bricks, boxes, candy, money, bugs..you name it. It was all about finding items in kid pix and having fun. They are really starting to get good at this new version.
2nd Grade: 2A — We worked on a small project...that I don’t know if we are going to get to finish. The students started making Fall pictures that we are going to create a slide show with. The students found a background then added pictures of themselves doing things they would do during the fall. They then saved their work. If we can do it, we will work on this some more next week and add more slides.
2B — We started playing catch-up today. I showed the kids how to use the background tool, the eraser tool, and the mixer tool. Ask them about the little girl and her BIG eye!

4th Grade: The students continued research on their powerpoint projects. By the end of the period they were supposed to have 10 sites bookmarks and notes taken on the them. Next week, we will download pictures.

2nd Grade: 2A — We began a unit where the students had to create a family tree. They ordered their relatives by generation, starting with them and their siblings, then their parents and their parents siblings, then their grandparents. They then connect the names into a family tree. We will finish this next week and print it out.

Digital Storytelling
This past weekend, I had the pleasure of learning about Digital Storytelling. DS is a process where a students uses script, images, audio, and editing to create an iMovie project that delivers a message. It is a multimedia version of the 5 paragraph argumentative essay.
It was very interesting to come up with a script, find appropriate images and music, then use iMovie to put them together and edit them to get my message across...I think this something that would find a nice home here...
