SAFETY WORKSHOPS FOR WORNICK KIDS AND PARENTS

Last month’s child abduction attempt in Foster City was an unfortunate reminder of the importance of teaching our children how to stay safe.  We have an opportunity to bring to Wornick a great program that teaches children about personal safety – with strangers, and in a large variety of other situations.

Please take 5 minutes to complete a survey that will help us determine how to bring this program to Wornick in a way that is most appropriate for our kids and parents.

Background:

The program is offered by KidPower, a non-profit group that teaches children, teens, and adults about self-protection and confidence-building skills. Detailed information about KidPower is available at www.kidpower.org.   Their workshops teach kids:

  • How to prevent dangerous situations through self-confident and aware behaviors
  • How to make wise choices with friends, and protect yourself from name calling, teasing, and unwanted touch
  • How to set appropriate boundaries with people you know
  • How to avoid conflict by walking away from trouble
  • How to use your body to escape from a dangerous situation and be persistent in getting help

The workshops under consideration for Wornick are:

1. Parent Workshop: 2 hour adult-only workshop that

  • Teaches parents of younger kids how to talk about and teach safety without scaring children
  • Teaches parents of older kids to help their children stay safe without stifling their search for independence
  • Total cost for unlimited number of adults is $600

2. Workshop for kids: 1 hour hands-on workshop in the classroom

  • Conducted in the classroom during school time (like a field trip without the travel)
  • Topics adjusted for the age of the kids
  • Parents welcome to observe
  • Approximate cost of 1 hour workshop for a class of about 20 kids: $225

COMPOSTING

Dear Wornick Community,

We are delighted and excited to advise that today, we began our organic composting program.
The students placed all of their lunch waste (paper and food) into a brown recycling bin instead the garbage pail – whose contents wind up in a landfill.  Wornick is going GREEN.

The only items we cannot compost yet are the plastic cutlery.  We’re looking into a corn based product and hopefully that will soon be on our organic menu as well.  (please note there may be a slight surcharge for those of you who buy hot-lunch – an average of 5 cents a day)  More details will follow shortly.

If your child brings lunch and snacks from home:

Please try to pack a no-waste lunch – you should see the collection of zip lock bags left every day in the trash.
Just imagine using tupperware or old yoghurt containers instead.

Your grandchildren will thank you for it.

Reduce – Reuse – Repair – Rot - Recycle
