MINUTES OF PTO MEETING OF 1/10/07

RCWJDS PTO MINUTES ● January 10, 2007

Executive Board Attendees:  Madeline Flanagan (Elementary School President), Rachel Kardos (Middle School President), Dana Spanger (Vice-President, Room Parents/Volunteers), Kathryn Karp (Vice-President, Chai Hours), Susan Chortkoff (Secretary)

Staff Attendees:  Mervyn Danker

Parent Attendees:  Ben Chortkoff, Dominique Rhodes, Lilia Sherman, Susie Sorkin, Jennifer Kardos, Sharon Hartley, Lilia Shirman, Jan Horowitz, Rebekka Berger, Esther Dicks, Sue Tobachnik

Welcome

Madeline Flanagan called the meeting to order at 7:10pm.

Executive Reports

President's Report – MF read several thank you notes from teachers and staff for their holiday gifts.  The process of gift giving from the parents and facilitated by the PTO to faculty and staff was reviewed by Jennifer Kardos.  A portion of PTO dues are earmarked for this purpose every year so there is equitable gift giving for the staff.  In December, everyone on RCWJDS payroll receives a gift from the parents/PTO.  Room parents may choose to collect a check from the PTO to do their own shopping or a gift certificate from Hillsdale Mall which is beautifully presented (Hillsdale Mall provides free gift wrapping) and Jennifer includes a personal note.

Treasurer's Report – Dana Spanger read the report prepared by Dana Kornfeld.

At start of school year, had created a budget with an estimated loss of $10,000.

Looks like we will balance our budget because of amazing success of the walkathon (budgeted to profit 7500, actual profit of over 19,000), the book fair (budgeted to profit 1400, actual profit of 2400) and art show (budgeted to profit 500, actual profit of 1860).

This updated working budget includes the 7500 expenditure for computers approved last meeting.

Also, re: check requests: check requests will be processed bi monthly (2x per month). All check requests need to be in writing, include receipts and placed in PTO Treasurer folder in the office file cabinet (or given directly to me).  In addition, please be sure to email treasurer so she knows to check the Folder. (2 weeks will start to run from date that email is received!!!)

Chair Reports

Teacher Appreciation – Susan Chortkoff shared a thank you note from faculty to PTO for sponsoring a "Nosh" for our faculty during their last three monthly in-services.  This new PTO program is in the early stages of organization but has been warmly received.  Kathryn Karp will provide the next nosh, followed by Madeline Flanagan.  If you would like to participate, please contact Susan Chortkoff for dates and menu ideas.

Spring Celebration – Kathryn Karp, liaison between the Spring Celebration Committee and PTO, shared that a check amount of $125, previously collected in PTO dues, is now available for individual classes to help create their Class Baskets and Class Projects to be for sale at the Spring Celebration.  Room parents are encouraged to pick up their checks and begin work on this important part of the Celebration.  This year the silent auction portion of this important fundraiser will be held online.  Please help obtain items for the silent auction by soliciting from local vendors and by donating personal or company items.  Forms are available in the lobby.  Travel type items are especially encouraged!  All forms are due by February 1st.

Enrichment - Upcoming Programming:

Grades 3-5 January 16th Lawrence Hall of Science:  Laser Reflections.

Grades 6-8 January 31st Lawrence Hall of Science:  Who Done It?

                        Grades K-5 February 13th Ranka's Musical Revue

New Business

Annual Campaign – Susie Sorkin, Development Chair of the RCWJDS Board, explained the goals of the Development Committee which is to raise funds for and to help develop community leaders for the support of RCWJDS.  Susie noted the formation last year of the Rashi Circle whose membership last year raised over $100,000 for RCWJDS.  This year the Board is launching the new Annual Campaign in order to help close the gap between tuition at the school and the actual cost of educating our students (including facilities, faculty and programming) and to continue to raise the bar standard of excellence at RCWJDS.  Mailings announcing the launch of this program will go out to school families and to the wider community.  Spring Celebration Sponsors will be recognized as having already contributed to this year's Campaign with additional donations gratefully accepted.  The Board hopes to enlist 100% participation of the school population and appreciates any size donation. 100% participation will help the school to solidify current funding from the Federation and may improve our eligibility in obtaining additional funding grants.  Join this important effort and rally support for the Campaign!!!

Kid Power – Lilia Shirman and Dominique Rhodes presented information about Kid Power, a program which teaches all ages, safety, confidence and self-protection and comes highly recommended by those previously participated.  Various options were discussed for introducing this program including incorporating the program into the curriculum versus doing a workshop for parents and gauging interest in developing a program including the children.  A motion was made to organize a parent only workshop as part of an adult education program however; a suggestion was made to further investigate whether the program would consider coming out to do a promotion to kids and parents at an assembly.  This will be reconsidered at next meeting.  Check out www.kidpower.org.

The next meeting will be on Wednesday, February 14th at 8:30am.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:25pm.

Respectfully submitted by Susan Chortkoff, Secretary

 ISRAELI UPDATE-ACHIEVEMENTS-2006

6th of JANUARY 2007

The mainstream media gives the impression that all the Israelis do is kill Arabs – preferably women and children – or demolish Arab homes when not spending their days in bomb shelters dodging rockets.

However surprisingly, in 2006 Israel's economy grew by 4.8 percent, a rate higher than that of any country in the West. Inflation remained at zero and, for the first time, exports exceeded imports (by $2.2 billion). The Bank of Israel forecasts that next year this figure will reach $5.3 billion.

Foreigners accounted for 30% of the luxury market and for more than $1 billion in Israeli real estate, much of it in housing. Israel's booming real estate market is attracting big-name developers, such as Donald Trump who is planning to erect a 70-story Trump Plaza Tower in Ramat Gan, just west of Tel Aviv.

Highlights of Israeli achievements in 2006:

Israeli nanomaterial more powerful than a locomotive
Israeli company ApNano developed one of the most shock-resistant substances known, able to withstand pressures equivalent to dropping 8 diesel locomotives onto an area the size of a fingernail. It's so impressive that a European Union Commission has granted ApNano $14 million as part of a project to develop new composite coatings and lubricants based on their nanoparticles.

Johnson & Johnson looks to the future with Israeli science
Hebrew University's new partner, US healthcare giant Johnson and Johnson, has cast a vote of confidence for the Israeli university's cutting edge scientific research by investing in its work. According to a J&J executive, "These guys are pushing the science and if we put them next to our guys who are pulling the science... the result will be synergistic. We are going to have a lot of fun."

Israeli technology IDs traces of explosives
If it takes a rocket scientist to develop a high tech tool to prevent terrorists from carrying explosives on board an aircraft, then Ehud Ganani – CEO of Israel's TraceGuard Technologies – is in the right job. With a solid background in weapons technology, he is bringing TraceGuard's CarrySafe system to the market. By delivering greater speed and accuracy than current screening solutions based on manual checking, CarrySafe will make travel dramatically safer and more convenient.

Israeli start-up fights bioterrorism – in real time
An Israeli start-up has developed a unique bioterrorism detection system that works like a smoke detector. The BAS101 technology sets off an alarm the instant it detects a biological hazard, such as anthrax, in the air. It identifies the agent on the spot, enabling officials to take immediate action instead of awaiting the return of test results from a lab. This is the first early-detection biodetector developed specifically for civil applications in public places.

Torino Olympics saved by Israeli snow-making technology
When Italy faced the prospect of snowless mountains only a month before the Winter Olympics, the organisers turned to Israeli water-valve manufacturers Bermad for their expertise in producing artificial snow. Let the Games begin!

Study shows Israeli elderberry extract effective against avian flu
Sambucol, an Israeli-developed elderberry treatment based on an old folk remedy has been proven, in new in-vitro tests, to be 99% effective against the avian-flu virus. While it is too soon to know if the treatment – invented by world-renowned virologist Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu – can cure avian flu in humans, British trials hold out hope that it may aid in stopping the spread of this disease.

Israeli start-up turns organic waste into energy
After you've enjoyed a tangy olive, don't throw away the pit. Thanks to the energy-saving technology of Israeli start-up Genova, the pits, along with other organic waste, could soon be providing a clean, green alternative to fossil fuels for heat and electricity production.

Israel's Brainsway stimulates a magnetic remedy for depression
Israeli company Brainsway has developed a non-invasive technique, deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation, said to be effective in treating depression without the negative side effects. The technique has great potential for treating a wide range of other mental illnesses, including Alzheimer's, drug addiction, and schizophrenia, and could revolutionise the world of psychiatric care.

Landfill gas gaining popularity in Israel
Landfill gas emissions were first harnessed for energy production in Israel in 2002. Kibbutz Evron in western Galilee, where methane gas collected from decomposing trash produces about 1,000 kilowatts of electricity per hour, saves more than $300,000 a year in electricity bills.

Israel's life-sciences industry saving lives
Over the past decade, Israel's life-science industry grew by more than 16% annually (to $1 billion in 2006) and Israelis now hold the most medical-device patents per capita in the world. Notably, the 'PillCam', patented by Israeli start-up Given Imaging, has served more than 260,000 patients by allowing doctors to see a full-colour video of a individual's gastro-intestinal tract.

Israeli surveillance cameras help the US stay 'vigilant'
Israel's Vigilant Technologies is protecting Americans from crime and terrorism in dozens of locations around the US. In New York City alone, police have over 3,000 Vigilant cameras dotting the streets of Manhattan in what is probably one of the largest digital monitoring installations in the world.
