This Week
What a busy, short week we've had!

Kindergarten geneticists built DNA strands with computational biologist and Wornick mom Lee Lior Hoffman Tuesday morning. After they built a strand and split it, kindergarteners realized that once a DNA sequence is set, it will be replicated exactly the same way throughout their bodies. That's a lot of learning before recess.

After that it was nice to settle down for the beautiful Kindergarten to Second Grade model Seder. There were flowers on the table, children in nice clothes, and beautiful Seder plates that each child had made. Everyone practiced a musical, meaningful and delicious Seder.

Speaking of Seders, look no further than the Fourth Grade Haggadah for all of your Passover rituals. You can find here an originally written Haggadah from class 4A to download and use at your Seder.

Though Passover was the dominant theme of the week, eighth graders looked at the journey from slavery to freedom from a different perspective. They wrapped up their study of the American Civil War with a mock trial in which the South was on trial for treason. Who won? That depends. In one class, the North prevailed and in the other class, it was the South.

Wishing you and your families a wonderful, delicious, safe and Hametz-free Passover break!

Announcements

Gift Card Orders
We're placing another gift card order soon. This is an easy gift-giving idea, and a great way to shop at your favorite stores and earn money for our school. Please complete and return the order form to the office by April 20.

"Raise the Roof" Film Screening
To mark Yom HaShoah at school, the Eighth Grade will be watching the film "Raise the Roof." This movie details the process of reconstructing a 17th century Polish synagogue for the Polin Jewish Museum of Warsaw. It's a fascinating and moving film, with many implications for the legacy of the Shoah in Europe and for Jews world-wide. The movie will be shown on Thursday, May 5 from 9:00-10:30 am in the Ulam Gadol. Parents are welcome to attend.

Yom Ha'atzmaut Falafel Lunch
Yom Ha'atzmaut is quickly approaching! Wornick hosts a falafel lunch for all of our students and staff and we are looking for volunteers to help serve the lunch. You earn Chai hours and get to enjoy Rachel's outstanding falafel treat. It will be on Thursday, May 12 from approximately 11:00 am to 1:00 pm. Please email pbodin@wornickjds.org if you are interested in volunteering.

Turn Matzah into Mitzvah: Fill a Seder Sack for People in Need!
Join Jewish Family and Children’s Services (JFCS) in our community-wide mitzvah project to provide Passover food to hundreds of our neighbors in need. A gift of $18 fills a Seder Sack with matzot, gefilte fish, macaroons, soup, and other foods that JFCS volunteers will deliver to homebound seniors, people with disabilities, and families in crisis in our community. For many recipients, this is their only opportunity to celebrate Passover and feel remembered at this time. See the attached flyer, or go to www.jfcs.org/sedersacks for more information.

JDS5K Registration is Now Open

Words of Wisdom

Dr. Gereboff's Head Notes: Three People Walk into an Office...
What do a Russian Jewish immigrant, a Jew by choice, and an American-born Jewish educator have in common?  Sounds like a beginning of a joke, but it’s not.  This cast of characters was engaged in a very serious and animated conversation in my office a few years ago.  The discussion was about making Passover meaningful for us and for our children.   Read More

A Light of Nations by Joel Abramovitz: B’Chol Dor V’Dor
Jewish holidays are days of remembrance. We are asked, by Torah and by custom, to set aside these holy days to remember what happened to our ancestors: the triumph of Esther and Mordecai at Purim, the dwellings of the Israelites in the desert in Sukkot, the tragedy of the 6 million on Yom HaShoah. But Peach is different - we are asked, obligated even - not just to remember, but to see ourselves as if we came out of Egypt.  Read More
