This Week
Kindergarten is exploring all of the human body's major systems. This week they tackled the digestive system, which lead to lots of fun conversation about where your food goes when you swallow. Kindergarteners constructed a wearable diagram of their digestive system to deepen their understanding.

In Language Arts, third grade is learning about onomatopoeia -- so many vowels in that word! It is any word that imitates the natural sound of a thing, such as meow, splash, bang, shhhh, and mooo. Then they went on a listening walk around Wornick, and made their own onomatopoeia from the sounds of a fan, construction noises, feet on the stairs, airplanes and cars and many more.

Passover is two weeks away, but our Jewish studies classes are hard at work preparing for a meaningful holiday. Fourth grade is writing its own Haggadah, and first grade learned a dance called the Afikomen Mambo. Fifth grade received a visit from Dr. Bruce Feldstein, director of the Jewish Chaplaincy at Stanford Hospital. Dr. Feldstein spoke with the students about the mitzvah of Bikur Cholim, or visiting the sick, and the students made special Passover gift bags and cards for hospital patients.

Sixth graders touted their knowledge of Ancient China at Chinese Culture Day on Monday. They shared their expertise at different learning stations on calligraphy, tea, clothing, food, recreation and music.

Seventh graders wowed us with their slam poetry. Topics ranged from outer space to Disneyland and homelessness. The performances were powerful and heartfelt, and the slam poetry winners were Aaron J., Lily B., Hayley F., Grant W. and Melissa M.

Middle Schoolers finished the week with an inspirational talk by former San Francisco 49ers running back Delvin Williams. Mr. Williams had many of the best individual performances in the franchise's history. He set the team's single-game rushing record of 194 yards, which stood for the next 22 years. After leaving the NFL, he became the executive director and founder of "Pros for Kids," which works to curb substance abuse among young people.

We're placing another gift card order soon. This is an easy gift-giving idea, and a great way to shop at your favorite stores and earn money for our school. Please complete and return the order form to the office by April 20.

Sunscreen Reminder
Things are heating up!  Please remember to apply sunscreen to your children in the morning so they are protected for their time in the sun. If you want them to re-apply at lunch, send them with sunscreen to keep in their classrooms or lockers. Children have different sunscreen sensitivities so we like them to have a proven brand for themselves. Hats are also a good idea – please make sure that they are labeled with their name.

Words of Wisdom

Dr. Gereboff's Head Notes: Teacherpreneurs
