This Week
The astronauts in Kindergarten learned about the Google LUNAR X prize challenge and began building their own prototypes for a rocket and moon rover. On another note, if you want to know what your favorite color smells like, stop by the hallway outside of kindergarten to read their color poems.

Fourth graders finished constructing the City of Ember this week, based on a close reading of the novel by that name. They are studying energy and circuitry, which will enable them to light up the city they've built.

Fifth graders learned about their upcoming artist studies--an inter-disciplinary research, writing and art project that will take several weeks.

And while it may look like the eighth grade science class is playing with Slinkys this week, they are actually studying the physics of waves.

Finally, our science and technology coordinators went back to school themselves on Tuesday. Dr. Adrian Krag from the Center for Initiatives in Jewish Education (CIJE) taught them how to use our fabulous new 3D printer! A gift from CIJE, the printer is a wonderful boost for our STEM programs, which students will use for applications in science and engineering. If you want to read more about Wornick's relationship with CIJE, check out this article in the latest issue of the JWeekly newspaper.

Introduction to Game Development Class
We are introducing a new after-school Chugim class taught by Digital Monkey School. There will be a demo on Tuesday, January 26 and classes will start on February 2. If you are interested, please contact Ryan at gesher@wornickjds.org.

Introduction to Game Development Class is a wonderful opportunity for students of all levels to get introduced to the art of computer games and to discover how they are made. Students learn 3D modeling and animation, populate their world with custom monsters and avatars, build their unique player character, items and powerups. Students learn to program custom behaviors, events, triggers and game rules. In this class, children will use their creativity and imagination, and will develop their three dimensional perception, cognitive skills, and fine motor skills.

Lost and Found Reminder
Please come browse through the our clothes rack in the front lobby for items that may belong to your children. There are unlabeled lunch boxes, thermoses, water bottles and endless outerlayers. Everything that is not claimed will be donated.

  • Mazel Tov to Lily B. on becoming a Bat Mitzvah this weekend!
  • Congratulations to Wornick alumnus Jacob Kantor, who reached nominee status in the Broadcom MASTERS national middle school science competition. Only 10% of middle school science fair projects receive this distinction, which is a great honor.

Words of Wisdom

Dr. Gereboff's Head Notes: Homework Wars
A few years ago, I observed a frustrated second grade boy who was upset because he had to close his journal since “writing was over” for the day. I asked him why he didn’t take the journal home so he could continue writing? He answered, “Because my teacher didn’t give it to us as homework… our journals don’t go home.”  Read More
